My son and I play "Hero" for several years (not all the time). In my view, the idea of the game is to explore first the environment that kills and/or provides tool and then plan in advance a way to collect all hearts and how to get to the door for a next level. One of the problems of newcomers seems to be in their desire to win from scratch rather than explore the environment and to be killed for several times in the process before making your decisive move.
In my view, the game is extremely challenging.
