This book examines how women’s construction of knowledge is connected their conceptions of self. The authors describe five perspectives women take in understanding knowledge, authority, and truth. Their conclusions are drawn from numerous and detailed interviews with women of all ages and walks of life. The life stories of the women are used to understand not only their epistemological beliefs but also what events and factors were influential in the development of such beliefs. This work stems from the fact that most psychological work including the work done on epistemological beliefs was based solely on the experiences of men observed and analyzed by male psychologists such as William Perry. In an attempt to explore possible differences in women’s development, Belenky and her colleagues underwent this research.

In their attempt to understand women’s experiences better, the authors describe how women move from silence into a perspective that allows them to find their “voice”. The five perspectives discussed in the book include: silence, received, subjective, procedural, and constructive. Once women move out of silence, they can obtain any of the perspectives. Individuals in the received perspective learn through listening, operate in a duality, seeing things as either right or wrong, and believe that truth comes from others, particularly authority figures. To have a subjective way of knowing means that one shifts the locality of truth from others to the self. Subjective knowers rely on their own voice to find truth and often describe “listening to their gut”. A procedural knower places more emphasis on finding truth through careful observation and analysis. Constructed knowers integrate all of the previously described perspectives (excluding silence) to construct knowledge and find truth, thus forming an authentic voice for themselves.

The one thing I found problematic about the Women’s Ways of Knowing framework was that the authors stressed that the perspectives were not to be viewed as stages or in a stage like trajectory. Although this seems like a valid request, I had some trouble in understanding how not to do so. The position of constructed knowing seems as though it is a more sophisticated way of knowing when compared to others. It seems one would have to go through and experience the benefits from the received, subjective, and procedural positions to be able to integrate them in such a way as the constructive knower does. Thus, I would have liked a more explicit outline for viewing the positions in a non-stage like fashion.

However, overall I felt the book was very thought provoking and contained a variety of insights. I especially enjoyed their use of interview data collected from a broad collection of women. I would recommend this book to not only researchers and educators interested in understanding the development of epistemological beliefs but also to college students. The reason I say this is because the book offers college students an opportunity to explore and deconstruct their own ways of knowing as they journey through a time when constructing knowledge and truth becomes a very crucial part of the education process.
