This book exposes the inequalities that poor children in the United States face every day when they walk through the doors of their schools. From holes in the ceilings, to sewage in the streets to a lack of text books for every child, Kozol illustrates how the American educational system neglects thousands of children based on their parents’ income.

Kozol writes of his travels to schools in Mississippi, St. Luis, New York, New Jersey, Washington, D.C., and San Antonio to tell the story of children who know their schools are different from the schools in wealthy neighborhoods but do not understand why.

The reader is introduced to each school through a vivid description of the area that surround the school and the children that live there. We learn of the problems each school faces and eventually we hear the same horrible conditions repeated with the introduction of each new school. Children are forced to have classes in closets, share books with five other children, and in some cases leave school at lunch time because the school is unable to provide food for them. There are no computers, few working bathrooms, and toilet paper is rare. Teachers are underpaid and many do not stay longer than a couple years. The students of these schools are reminded everyday that they live in a society that does not value them as they witness understand the differences between their schools and the wealthier schools.

Kozol explicitly describes the financial differences between how much the wealthy schools invest in their children and how much the poorer schools can. A distinct line is drawn between rich and poor as parents who live in the privileged neighbors reject any ideas of integrating schools or giving financially to the schools in poor areas. Wealthy citizens claim money is not the answer but after reading Kozol’s description of the poor schools, he provides a valid argument that money would be an excellent place to start.

We also learn about the role government has played in allowing these inequalities to exist for so many years. Kozol describes the injustices at both the local, state, and national level as a way of understanding how we got here and what it will take to make the situation better.

Perhaps the most powerful part of the book for me personally was the conversations Kozol has with the students in both poor and rich schools. You hear innocence and hope in the younger less privileged children and you hear silent disdain in the older ones. When he speaks with students from the wealthier schools, all voice an understanding of the inequalities between what they have and what others do not. Some do not see a solution to the problem but in the voices that do, the reader is left with hope. The conversations between children of similar ages remind you how very different society has made them when they are actually very similar but from different backgrounds.

I would highly recommend this book to a wide audience; from parents, to educators, to students. The savage inequalities that are revealed need to be understood by every U.S. citizen but especially by those who are privileged and may never know of injustices we as a society bring upon innocent children based on something they have no control over. By not providing an equal playing field we force poor children to remain poor, but perhaps even more damaging, we force them to believe they are worth less than others.
