Peep! is about a young boy is walking down the sidewalk and comes across a hatching egg. He watches it hatch and the duckling follows him everywhere. He first seems annoyed by the duckling, but then grows to love and take care of it. The duckling and boy spend a lot of time together, but one day the ducking comes across a flock of ducks and quacks at them. The boy realizes that the duck belongs with other ducks and decides to release it to live with other ducks. He is sad when he is alone without the duck, but then he comes across a kitten and he is no longer lonely. The author is presenting an opportunity to teach children about the friendship that can develop between a person and their pets, and also the difficulty of letting go of a close friend. It is exciting to watch the boy's feelings for the duck to change form the annoyance that he felt in the beginning to the love that he had for the duck when he had to let it go. It was also sad to see how lonely the little boy was after he had to let his close friend leave with the flock of ducks, but luckily he found another friend. This book would be perfect for a young child that is not yet able to read. He or she could read the story by looking at the pages. A child that has more experience with literature when they are too young to read will certainly develop confidence needed to learn.
