Very informative but disturbing site. The art work is truly phenomenal, perhaps a reflection of the social injustice which afflicts Roma. Nothing would please me more than to see Roma rise to the prosperity and respect that they deserve.

I am impressed and motivated. We desire to help the Roma people, we have many friends in the area of Spiske Nova Ves. I desire to begin schools for mothers/children with art, toys and education to prepare the pre-school children for entry into the school system. Any advice?

I am currently taking a class about the Romani, at Evergreen State College, in Washington State. We have learned the Romani have been romanticized and persecuted, sometimes simultaneously. As a class we discussed education being a double pronged problem, the state (or schools for state funding) will place Romani children in classes for children with learning disabilities, in which they are set up to fail, and on the other hand Romani parents don’t want their children to attend school with non-Romani (Gadje) because they are teased, beaten, or culturally may become Marimè. I think your art program is a great way to tackle this problem. With art children have a boundless ability to express themselves. Children have a taste of success at school, which make the learning process that much easier. I applaud your Herculean effort to make the social and economical struggle of the Romani, not only in Slovakia but also worldwide, an issue for the world to take notice. You are a remarkable man to instill in children who do not share a common link to you (aside from being a descent human-being) pride in themselves, their culture heritage, and collective history. I would recommend Katerzyna Pollok’s website, she is an enlighten human being.

dear jan your work with the roma children is inspiring. It strikes me as a teacher of middle to upper class children how rich in history and images the roma culture is. I am inspired to work harder to bring my students interests, and every day lives into their art. thank you for thinking so well about the world and oppression and how it is passed on. jaci kildare

Hello.

I came across your website and saw all of the wonderful art that was made by roma children under your instruction. I wanted to leave a comment in your guestbook but the site does not allow this without some password.

I work in an art gallery at a local community college and assist the art professors in open studios. I often meet college age people who are not literate and who have never experienced art in any formal setting. It is interesting to witness their reactions to different pieces on display.

After reading what you said in regard to teaching disadvantaged and romani children, it throws into relief how twisted traditional teaching methods often are! How strange is it to force everyone to ignore their own ideas in order to get them to memorize the curriculum! Your methods are really something that should be explored for teachers of all grades with students from all backgrounds.

Kudos on your awesome website. I enjoyed looking at the art!
