Thanks, David, for adding one more metaphor for the "top-down" approach. Below are three useful metaphors that I know:

"Top-down"

1) From "whole" to "parts"

2) From "purpose" to "tool"

3) From "why" to "how".

"Bottom-up" approach

1) From "parts" to "the whole".

2) From "tool" to "purpose".

3) From "how" to "why".
