Sharon, very nice discussion topic. I think allot of kids are like Kyle in that even when they do know the rules of a game, many prefer to make up there own rules. It may be because this enables them to talk to one another, agree on things, and move along in terms of playing the game, faster. I also think that there is something kids learn through frustration. For example, by Yennie telling you the real rules of the Life game, and although Kyle got frustrated from it, I believe he learned from the experience and will carry this experience with him when he plays future board games, particularly Life.
