Mercedes, there are some very interesting themes that came out of your field notes. The first is that we as students, who work with kids have no real knowledge of the kids' histories. It may have been that Silvia has had a very personal and scarring experience in her past with men that has gotten here to be fearful or cautious around them. Also, it maybe that her mother may have abandoned her or left her alone at a time when she need her. They way she was interacting with you, (i.e., calling you mom, etc.), made me think that this may have happened to her. I want to encouarege you to do what you were doing. Be patient, continue to work with her / other kids, as best as you can, and draw upon all of us (i.e., Eugene, Pablo, myself and your classmates) for support and discussion. I will talk to Eugene and Pablo and possibly we will talk to Maurice and Arelia to get a better picture of her history. On the flip side, what do you think you have learned from this challenging experience and how do you think it will affect or not your future interactions with kids? Thank you Mercedes', Ed.
