This is really strange. I can't make much sense of it either. What is your impression, how Sylvia really felt. Was she showing signs of fear or discomfort when hiding or talking about the monster?
About that mommy thing: if you get a chance, why not try to let her play the role of the mother, so you can find out what that role means to her (just an idea).
