It sounds like the child you were working with is very socialized to believe that winning is everything. It may be that he was upset at the fact that you won. It may also be that Annie seemed to him a worthy opponent in the fact that she lost before she won. I don't have an answer to your question except to suggest that you observe his actions, then maybe you can get a feel for why he does what he does.
