Mercedes, nice field note. Your descriptions of Isis is a nice example of how an expert assists a novice through their individual ZPD. Altough you highlighted what Isis learned and how, what about yourself? What did you learn from the experience? Also, many kids who work together will often have difficulties, in terms of one or the other trying to dominate. I believe you did a good job in that you paired the kids up and let them work together. One strategy to think about is talking to both of them and saying you want to play a game with them. You would like the expert to teach the novice by explaining what he / she knows and then having the novice repeat exactly what was said. This is called "mirroring". It can also be used by the novice who could explain to the expert the questions and / or concerns they have and the expert will repeat back exactly what the novice says. Another question I have for you, is does learning take place through conflict and role negotiation? Ed.
