Valerie, your experience with both Sara and Nicky, and particularly with the little girl are very common. First off, do you see any ways that kids can learn through conflict as Sara and Nicky were engaging in? There has been work in that area that suggests that kids can learn through conflict (i.e., Piaget, Azmitia), and that conflict leads kids with having to deal with negotiating new roles with eachother. As for the young 3 year old, do you see any learning htat could have evolved through the ambiguity you two experienced? One strategy to think about in the future, is just to ask her. Ask her if she knows how to do what you have just shown her and then ask her to show you again. I hope this helps, Ed.
