The work of each grade is developed around central themes or units, comprehensive enough to include most of the usual subjects, such as English, Social Studies, Arithmetic and Science. The interests of the children concerned largely determine the programme of a particular group. Numerous cooperative enterprises encourage the child to experiment, plan, share and create, and help him to become a thinking, self-directing individual. Constructive play and creative activity are encouraged. A beginning is made in teaching the child to organize his work, to use "free" time to advantage and to assume desirable responsibilities. Emphasis is placed upon attitudes that lead to self-mastery and social cooperation (p.166).
